North American Beaver

North American Beaver

The North American beaver (Castor canadensis) is one of two extant beaver species. It is native to North America and introduced to Patagonia in South America and some European countries, like Finland. The North American beaver is an official animal symbol of Canada and is the official state mammal of Oregon.
Kingdom        : Animalia
Phylum          : Chordata
Class             : Mammalia
Orde              : Rodentia
Family           : Castoridae
Genus           : Castor
Species         :C. canadensis
Like human marriage, the North American Beaver will have only one mate in its lifetime unless its mate dies. A Beaver begins mating at around the age of three. In the Northern regions, the mating season is from January to March. And in the Southern regions, it happens in November and December. The female North American Beaver is pregnant with its litter for about three months. Baby Beavers will live with their parents for two years.
A beaver has webbed hind feet and a large, flat, nearly hairless tail. It uses its tail to help maintain its balance when it is gnawing on trees. It will also slap its tail against the water to signal danger or to warn away predators. A beaver has short front legs with heavy claws. Their rear legs are longer, and it uses its rear webbed feet to help propel itself through the water. When a beaver is under water, its nose and ears close up and a special membrane named nictitating membrane  covers its eyes. A beaver has a thick layer of fat under its skin that helps keep it warm underwater. A beaver also has teeth that grow troughout the beaver’s life to cut into trees and woody vegetation.
Beavers live near rivers, streams, ponds, small lakes, and marshes. They build lodges of sticks and mud on islands, on pond banks, or on lake shores. Not all beavers build lodges, some beavers build burrows in the banks of rivers.
Most of the beaver's diet is made up of tree bark and cambium. They especially like the bark of willow, maple, birch, aspen, cottonwood, beech, poplar, and alder trees. Beavers also eat other vegetation like roots and buds and other water plants. A beaver has a specialized digestive system that helps it digest tree bark.
Beavers are still active throughout winter and still use their ponds even when they are covered with a layer of ice. Beaver may be submerged underwater for up to 15 minutes. Beaver can swim up to 5 miles per hour.
One of the uniqueness of North American Beaver is it is a semiaquatic animal, that
means it can live in both water and land. It also has transparent eyelids that will help them to
see under water. It manipulates its predators by making an empty lodges.
